New San Pedro Tunnel Now Open

After 5 years of construction and 85 million Euro’s of financing, the new San Pedro Tunnel is now fully operational and ready just in time for the holiday season. The new underpass was officially opened on the 26thJune 2012 by the Minister For Public Works, Ana Pastor and Marbella Mayoress, María Ángeles Muñoz. The tunnel was actually due to be completed back in 2009 but was put on hold in 2010, due to a lack of finance. The company that was undertaking the building work decided to down tools and up until yesterday, was a work in progress. Each day approximately 65,000 vehicles will pass this particular stretch of the A7 and the new tunnel will no doubt help to keep things moving and relieve congestion. There will also be approximately 90,000 sqm of land which will be available for development. Many local retailers and local residents have over the past 5 years experienced a terrible amount of disruption due to the building work. It’s hoped that the new tunnel will help to put this behind them and help rejuvenate the San Pedro area ready for the Summer period.
